Influenza Partner,

West Virginia reports the following for week ending Saturday, March 3, 2012 (MMWR week 9):

 Influenza activity: SPORADIC

 Number of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) reported: 1922 cases

 25 sentinel providers reported 0.8% of visits were due to ILI

 Active influenza outbreaks: NONE

 Influenza testing (includes PCR, Immunofluorescence or Viral Culture):

o Hospital and Referral Laboratories: reports 11 positive tests for Influenza A, no positive test for Influenza B

o WV Office of Laboratory Services (WV OLS): 4 positive test for Influenza A

o Note: During low influenza activity, the negative predictive value of a rapid influenza test is high. A negative rapid influenza test may need to be confirmed by culture or PCR among patients with ILI, especially those with severe illness or in an outbreak setting.
